I’m sooooo excited! A dear friend just sent me a book on the history of the gypsy people -somethign that just has to be appealing for anyone who has felt it difficult to stay in one place.

Bury Me Standing: The Gypsies and their Journey, Isabel Fonseca (1995)

I’ve been interested in reading about the gypsies for some time, especially as they’ve recently been in the news as targets of deportation in Italy after a woman was found murdered near a Roma camp. Their situation seems a particularly interesting one against the backdrop of increasing state controls on movement, as many of their migrations would  cross previously porous borders.

I’ve only gotten through the third chapter so far, but I’m hooked.
